Showcasing Appalachia one day at a time
Exploring Forgotten America: Deep Inside Appalachia’s Coal Country
Mullens West Virginia is an old railroad town, and a former coal hub. This place has so much history. I hate how so many towns like that are now part of what we call "Forgotten America". I want to show the places, the beauty they bring, and show how they are fighting that theme of "forgotten".
Thanks for watching.

A Historic Safe Haven for Black Travelers Deep In Appalachia
Переглядів 721Місяць тому
I had an absolutely amazing experience learning about The Thelma Hotel in Bluefield West Virginia. This hotel was a safe haven for black travelers to stay at when coming through the area. This hotel had very famous guests including W.E.B. Du Bois, Langston Hughes, Ike and Tina Tuner, and more. Sometimes the past can be a very touchy subject, but I'm a very firm believer in learning from the pas...

I love exploring small towns in Appalachia. I recently checked out The Well Coffee Shop in Tazewell Virginia, this place was one of the first businesses on Main Street that offered food as the town began to revitalize its downtown. This is crazy
Such a fun experience!
I grew up in a coal camp and worked in the coal mines. Great job on the video. This brought back many memories.
Thank you for watching. I hope you enjoyed it!
Beautiful land. ;)
Yes!
Greetings from Poland! 👍🖐
Cześć! Thanks for watching!
Part 2 inside the company store?
Funny enough, I shot this video almost a month ago... and then yesterday (the day i released this) i went and shot video in the company store. So that'll be VERY soon!
@@jonfromappalachia I was there lol, the kid you talked to
@@ThomasColosi BRO! hahaha that's amazing!
Did you just run into Barry and then he showed you around, or is he an actual tour guide or something?
He's not a guide, but he's a friend of a friend kind of thing
Wonderful video. Thanks for showing us small town Appalachta -the folks aera and food People are so at ease with you--shows you have what it takes!!
I really appreciate that. I hope to keep on sharing great stories!
yeah i think that tattoo is terrible, but to each their own! if thats the look you like then i respect that and more power to you! art is in the eye of the beholder, and we are all welcome to have our own opinions. they seemed like very nice people.
Hey that's what makes the world cool, people like different things! Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoyed it, LOTS more content coming up!
My old friend Craig McCarty lives there
Tazewell rules!
Hold the pork and I’ll try some ❤
Heck yeah, they are soooo good
Cool technique and shop to see. What is the tattoo of?
Just a small mountain range with snowcapped mountain tops
Subscribed! Great content. Peace and love from Israel 🇮🇱
Thank you so much!
Very cool channel. Great thumbnails, great editing, I'm very surprised you only have 1,800 subscribers. I bet your channel is gonna blow up soon. Reminds me of big travel channels like Bald & Bankrupt. Appalachia is such a cool place, it definitely deserves a whole channel devoted to it.
I REALLY appreciate the kind words, thank you so much
I hope not.
Main Street is there because of a fist fight... Most Appalachian thing ever
I'm bout to make a short out of this
Such a cool spot
It's amazing!
I grew up right next to DC raised by my grandma from Edinburg, VA. This was like a trip back to my childhood!!! Fried chicken, pepperoni rolls, cornbread, collards, chicken and pastry all sending me home. Stuff I'd love to see on here is popeye, not to be confused with pot pie, simple square flour and water noodles boiled in beef or VA ham broth with potatoes, and ribble (called rivel some places) soup, beef or VA ham broth with shredded cabbage, potatoes, and tiny flour and water dumplings made by crumbling the dry dough into pea-ish sized pieces and dropping it in. Cabbage and Kielbasa (only other ingredients are water, salt and potatoes) was another regular dinner, roots in Poland but 'refined' in Appalachia. You got another sub, keep up the good work, your video and editing work is great!
Thank you for watching! I definitely need to get some of those on here. Glad you enjoyed :)
This was an awesome video guys, thanks for sharing! Cant wait to make a roadtrip to Tazwell to visit these places & nosh!
Thank you for watching!
I can’t say enough, how much I love they use historic houses or buildings and just refurbish them instead of tearing them down and putting some ugly modern cheap no meaning building instead of it… Bravo to all those that try to maintain history and can utilize it for what their needs are absolutely love it… Thanks for a great video
Thank you so much for the kind words! I hope to continue to showcase areas like this!
Neat.
Thank you for watching!
Mmmmmm, making me hungry!
Good stuff to eat here!
You guys say like as much as Valley girls 🤣. Eat that cornbread WITH the collards
Haha. Yeah. It’s my filler word.
If I come across swordfffish definately trying it! Love your videos
Thank you so much!
Lord, this food🤩
Come check it out!
@@jonfromappalachia I would! But Norway, Europe is a bit far away🙈 but one day! One day!🤩♥️
@@coffeeorchaos3946 HEY! Norway, one of my most desired destinations! Jeg elsker Norge!
This is one of my favorites, Magic. I've wanted to keep bees for so long. Would love to meet these folks and check out the ABC sometime.
Thank you man. I’ll see what I can do to get you up there!
This was the most Appalachian thing ever
Dude, yes haha
Such a nice area
I wish it was a bit closer, i'd go down there more often if it was
I forgot to add that crunchy breading on the outside of that chicken breast looked phenomenal. I'm sure it was absolutely delicious
The breading was AMAZING!!
The secret to juicy chicken breast is a 3-hour brine and 5% salt to water ratio. That makes it delicious. Cooked to 160 °
That chicken may be the juiciest i've ever had in my life
New sub---- great channel
Thank you so much!
Luv the ECW hat ! Never saw anyone eat soup with a fork before 😅
ECW! haha, yeah i was just trying to fish out the specific parts to show them for the video.
Been waiting on this
This was super fun
This was a great one.. learned so much! 🐝
I almost uploaded the whole video without edits. It was over an hour and a half of just pure knowledge
Such a great video you do a really nice job with everyone… That place seems like it would be your local favorite because they’re so genuine. I so hope that town does great and the sandwich looked awesome.😊
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching
Tourist trap and ya'll got caught.
Nah, I went down to showcase Tazewell. They've been really good to me filming, so i wanted another video down there with them.
Yeah! Pepperoni rolls are everybody's Grannie's traditional recipe.
The best part is, they all taste so different
If ever in Peters town WV get a pepperoni roll from sugar mountain bakery !
@@gregsobek722 Peters town is only like 40 minutes from me, i'll do this asap!
@@jonfromappalachia you won't be disappointed !
Really interesting content.
I appreciate that so much. Thank you!
Do y’all remember - back in the day - when you would go to a restaurant and just say tea - when they asked your drink - and they knew what you were ordering - I think that term started from up North
Generally speaking, if you ask for tea here, it's coming sweet.
@@jonfromappalachia where I live too - just ask for tea and they do know - But - went to Hillsboro Virginia and asked for tea they asked if I wanted it hot or cold - crazy
@@beverlyhill6783 haha yeah! If we Appalachians can do anything, it's take something somewhat healthy and add a ton of sugar and other crap to it to make it unhealthy but delicious!
Best fried chicken i ever had was in cornelia georgia.
Heck yeah!
My father and his family are from West Virginia, a small town called Princeton but the problem is it's folded up now
I live near Princeton, are you talking about Mercer County? Princeton has had a little bit of a surge in some businesses come in. It's definitely come a long way in the last 10-15 years.
Awesome any time I hear of Appalachia culture I'm always impressed
Thanks for watching!
Oh man i love moonpies, the banana ones! And RC cherry cola is my absolute favorite! Also im now a new subscriber!
Thank you so much! I hope you enjoyed :)
That fork tho.
lol Thanks for watching!
One of my favorite meals is soup beans, collard greens, and a big hunk of corn bread.
All day!
Here we go!
Oh yeah!
If you don't put pepper sauce on your cards & ru.ble some good buttermilk cornbread in the pot liquor you don't know what you are doing.
Growing up my grandpa would put cornbread in buttermilk. I never did that but I did put it in regular milk
First time watching you all and a big HELLO fron East TN. Great job! Everything looked so good. Look forward to more of your videos.
Appreciate that! I hope to venture over into Eastern Tennessee a bit soon!
Brown biscuits. Corn bread light and brown. Real butter. Crunchy juicy chicken. Seasoned greens.
Delicious!
That looks so good.
Thanks for watching!
First time watching, loved your video that chicken did look awesome also love the place that was super cool… Must say people are very friendly really like that… Thanks guys
Thanks for watching. That's how people are here, super friendly. Appalachia has a lot of negative attention, and a lot of it is rooting in simply people not actually knowing. My goal with my channel is to shed light on the positive things and show how awesome this area can be.
